This Election Brings Words Front and Center

What I Wrote

In the early days of the country’s COVID recovery, I wrote a piece called “What Will You Remember?” I still read it from time to time to remind me what matters. Most importantly for today, I talked about how COVID taught me to “think about whether my words and actions are the right ones if they turn out to be my last ones.”

I also wrote that “our heroes and our traitors come center stage when the world fights to still be the world.”

Reminded of my own thoughts, I think now is the time to use our most well thought out and meaningful words, our most compelling music, our most expressive dance and all of our unique talents, whatever they may be, to make sure they are the “right ones.” Because in a world where tyranny seems possible despite how absurd that sounds, we must ensure that our effort to protect democracy is not our last one for years or, worse, generations.

The first place to check out is the campaigns’ websites. But if you want to dig deeper (highly recommended, an informed voter is the most powerful voter), here are some suggestions. I can’t bring myself to advertise Trump books, but I do include books or articles that give insight into the broader political landscape. There are so many to choose so consider this an ever growing list.

1. Pretty much anything written by Bob Woodward (of Watergate fame). Fear, Peril and Rage are all Trump histories.
2. Kamala Harris, The Truths We Hold

3. Mitt Romney, Reckoning.
4. Project 2025, Mandate For Leadership, available on Project 2025’s website.

Wondering why a site supporting VP Harris includes the biography of a Republican and the Bible of the conservative movement? Well, Romney is an example of how one can disagree on policy without relinquishing all moral and ethical principles. As for the Project 2025 missive, we first need to understand the other side before we can ever effectively oppose it. Happy Reading!
